The Camp at sunset

'The Camp,' seen from the shore of Lake Pontchartrain at dusk

Sadly, “the camps” as well as all of “Little Woods” and the other historic camps are gone forever. After Katrina, all that remains is several lonely pilings to mark where the ‘camps’ once stood. Although several pilings with sills still attached were found in the center of Hayne Blvd, most of the camps simply disappeared. The old claw foot tub and the Chinese Junk ships wheel were found under several feet of sand nearby. It will be sorely missed. Hopefully it will live on in the memories family, friends and neighbors who passed a good time there.

The Jazz Fest parties, jam sessions, crawfish and crab boils, the fourth of July parties , and all of the spur-of-the-moment get togethers with friends and family will long live in our memories. Where else can you walk over a ‘floor light,’ use an ‘Atomic Decrapulator’ or dance to a jukebox in a light show filled room full of fog?

It was a unique slice of New Orleans history and culture. Hopefully, we can rebuild The Camp again in another location. Then we can share the lake breeze, starry nights and incredible sunsets again with our family and friends. If you’d like to preserve some of your memories of the camps write them down and email them to us. We’ll put them all to share a smile and memory with you.

The Kitchen

We had a large kitchen, den, bar area, several great porches, and elevated decks for partying or just watching beautiful sunsets over the lake. It was perfect for company picnics, re-discovering the beauty of nature or bringing the family out for a chance to re-connect and get to know each other again in a private secluded part of paradise.

The water is clean, clear and the perfect depth for the slide, swing or swimming off of the deck. Kayaks and water toys are available and the fish are biting at night under our huge fishing light or ten minutes away at the mouth of the Industrial Canal. Two of the partners and a friend brought in over fifty pounds of Speckled Trout in a single two-hour outing last year at the Fourth of July!

Directly across the street was 'The Castnet,' a great seafood store and sandwich shop. You could pick up your own or we could cater any event with hot boiled seafood, gumbo, or anything else you desire.

"The Camp" was full of strange and whimsical artwork. Here's the world's first 'Atomic Decrapulator.' We bet you've never seen a toilet like it in your life.

Wurlitzer jukebox and main lounge

From a real 1964 Wurlitzer jukebox to a full-sized bar with it's own full-sized refrigerator, 'The Camp' was perfect for partying in the "Ole N'Awlins Style!"

From the lakeside porches and sea breezes to the 'Hall of Lost Camps' to the clear 'floorlight,' you'll fall in love with the unique spirit and history of 'The Camp.'

Back door

One of our local Fortune 500 companies often rented 'The Camp' for special seminars, employee relocation parties, recognition events, and team celebrations. They often spent the night in one of the available 12 beds and fish and visit during seminar breaks. 'The Camp' could easily accommodate up to 80 guests for parties.

We could also rent out the two front bedrooms as 'Bed and Breakfast' rooms. Each of these bedrooms has its own private bathroom as well as its own unique ambience. The 'Key West Room' had an old claw-footed tub with a perfect view just right for a romantic soak while sipping wine and watching the city lights in the distance. The 'South Seas Room' boasted a private 'lanai' (porch) to watch the moon rise over the water. We just had world-famous Australian author John Bailey and his wife as guests for a week's stay and they loved it.

Don't forget it was a very affordable place for your out-of-town friends to stay during Jazz Fest, Mardi Gras, or just a weekend away from civilization. For a great vacation without missing work or your kids' events, rent 'The Camp' for a week this summer. It's was just 15 minutes from downtown New Orleans and you could retire to your private island each night to fish, play, and relax with your family.

While it existed, you could introduce your family, friends, or business associates to the way that New Orleanians traditionally enjoyed life in 'the good ole days,' when family values were different and kids and parents had time to talk. When families spent the day swimming, boating or reading a good book. Nights were spent sharing a seafood dinner, playing cards or games, or just engaging in conversation on the pier as the skies darkened after sunset. As you sat a thousand feet out over the lake watching an incredible sunset, the stress and confusion of New Orleans seemed a million miles away!!
